Catalog Copy: CSE 293W. Computer Science and Engineering Design Project. Either semester. Three credits. Prerequisite: CSE 258 and either CSE 261 or 262 or 263 or 265 or 268 or 269.

This course is the second semester of the required major design experience. In one semester-long team project, students will propose, design, produce, and evaluate a software and/or hardware system. The project will culminate in the delivery of a working system, a formal public presentation, and written documentation. Oral and written progress reports are required.

W Criteria: The purpose of this course is complete a significant project, which requires a substantial amount of written communication (see included “Writing and presentation requirements in supplemental information).  Each student will be responsible for certain sections of the interim and final work, and will receive individual as well as group feedback. As the written work is substantial, it will weigh heavily in the grade (40-60%), some based on individual work, some based on overall group work.  Page breakdowns are given in the supplemental information.

Writing instruction is primarily through the oral and written feedback from the instructor on the written work and its revisions.  Conferences will be both individual and by project team with instructor.

The overall specifications and the individual component designs go through a formal submit-get feedback-revise-resubmit cycle.  These will be revised at least once more as they are incorporated into the final report and documentation.

The writing and presentation requirements (in the supplemental information) without the italicized comments are given to the students as a part of the course syllabus.  Its last paragraph states:

Grading of the writing and presentations aspect of the course:  A portion of each student's grade will be based on the writing and presentations on the course.  That portion is based on a combination of individual and group assessment.  However, as this is a W course, each student must pass the individual writing assessment (based largely on the Individual Component Designs and their revisions) in order to pass this course.
