Catalog Copy: 270W. Global Communication (formerly offered as COMS 206W). Either semester. Three credits. Prerequisite: ENGL. 105 or 110 or 111 or 250. Recommended preparation: COMM 130 or COMS 135.

International communication patterns, globalization of media industries; new technologies; communication in war and peace; political, economic, social and cultural effects.

W Criteria: The writing assignments will require the students to conduct a literature review of the relevant theory, background and current development s of the course topic. These literature review results will be incorporated into the writing assignments to enhance student learning of the course content. There will be three writing assignments of papers of at least 5 pages in length. Total written pages for the semester will comprise at least 15 pages in length. These three assignments will be weighed at least as one third of the course grade. Students will be informed in the syllabus and in lectures that failing the written requirements for the course will cause Failure in the class.

The primary mode of writing instruction in the course will involve the following:
a. individual conferences with students to provide assistance;
b. written commentaries for each submitted assignment to support revision efforts; and
c. formal instructions in class that provide standardized guidelines.

Each submitted assignment will receive timely feedback before the next deadline or assignment is due. Students will be allowed three revisions of their submitted work.

The course syllabus will clearly state that students must pass the "W" writing component of the course in order to pass the course.

Supplementary Information: The Communication Program (a division of the Communication Sciences Department) really wishes that it could offer W courses that will serve the curricular needs of its own majors as well as majors in other related fields.

A course such as Global Communication is one that fits the criteria of a Writing Across the Curriculum course. This course should be beneficial to students in a number of other social science disciplines, e.g., journalism, political science, Latin American Studies, Psychology, and Sociology.
