Catalog Copy: Chem 242W Advanced Organic Chemistry Lab Either semester. Three credits. One class period and two three hour lab periods. Prerequisite: CHEM 245; ENGL 105 or 110 or 111 or 250. Advanced techniques and fundamentals of organic synthesis and identification.

W Criteria: Chem 242W is an optional advanced laboratory course in methodology of synthetic organic chemistry. Ten experiments on different techniques and types of reactions are included. Four of the experiments require a short report (~5pp each) and six require a long report (~10pp each). The short reports include experimental details, results, new lab techniques and references. The long reports also include a "mini-review" of that major reaction and a discussion of the new technique employed. The first report of each type will be corrected, returned for revision with written comments within a week after submission, and a final version submitted a week later. The revised reports are graded and set the standard for subsequent reports. The reports make up 70% of the grade of the course and the course cannot be passed without satisfactory writing.
