Title: Greek and Roman Epic

Catalog Copy: (Formerly offered as CLAS 241W.) Either semester,
alternate years. Three credits. Prerequisite: ENGL 105 or 110 or 111 or 250.
Recommended preparation: CAMS 101 or 102 or 103. A knowledge of Greek or
Latin is not required.
A study of classical epic, with special emphasis on Homer's Iliad and
Odyssey and Vergil's Aeneid, but including also other examples of the genre.
Oral and literary epic, their social and political contexts, and the
influence of classical epic on later
literature.
W Criteria: 1. The papers and journal for this course
allow students to master the concepts of Classical Epic within the framework
of true critical thought. The journal amounts to about 20 pp., there are two
papers of 5pp. and one paper of
7pp; each of these papers is revised, giving a total of 17 revised pages
for the course. These together constitute 90% of the course grade.
2. Instruction in writing is conveyed through once-a-week discussions of
issues in writing and through a peer-review system.
3. Each of the papers for the course undergoes a revision process.
4. The syllabus states that students who do not pass the writing portion
of the course cannot pass the course as a whole.
