General Education at the University of Connecticut

What does it mean to be a well-educated college graduate?

The University has undertaken a comprehensive
review of its undergraduate General Education
Requirements and come up with a new system,
launched in May 2005.

The requirements are designed to ensure that
we graduate articulate, responsible, and engaged
citizens of the world. The General Education
curriculum, by State mandate, comprises one third
of the total coursework in a bachelor’s degree.
The new system has fewer categories and
more choices than the old system and is better
coordinated with the requirements of individual
majors. It represents a wonderful opportunity for
students to select a plan of study that will allow
them to develop intellectual depth and breadth in
the context of courses that truly excite them.
The University of Connecticut General
Education Requirements are designed
to ensure that students...

ACQUIRE

     culture and experience
a working understanding of the processes by which      one can continue to acquire and use knowledge
