General Education Curriculum Assessment and Learning Outcomes

GEOC is now looking into ways to discover whether the goals of the general education program as a whole and those of the individual content areas and competencies are being met. As part of that process, we are recasting the content area requirements, which currently are expressed as what courses should do, into learning outcomes, i.e. what students should be able to do upon completing their courses. Expressing the course goals in this way will allow us to determine the extent to which they are being met.

Draft learning outcomes for Social Sciences, Science and Technology, and Diversity and Multiculturalism content areas have been prepared by the respective GEOC subcommittees, consisting of faculty from the relevant departments. We are now initiating a process for their review by all interested faculty so that we can have broad input into what our students should be learning within our general education program. Specific discussion meetings will be announced, but any comments can also be emailed directly to geoc@uconn.edu.
